Sakhalin regional museum is the central museum of the Sakhalin region. The museum was founded in 1896 by the military governor of Sakhalin D. V. Merkazin. Currently, it occupies a Japanese building from 1937, which was built in the traditional national style of teikan-zukuri, the only one of its kind on the territory of both Sakhalin and the whole of Russia.
